Current ruleset on the subject of trained Machine Learning modelsΒΆ

Please find below the current Airlock ruleset around trained ML models:

  • You can import trained models into the RE (subject to review and approval by Genomics England) via Airlock.
  • You can export model testing statistics and model outputs in cases where those outputs are suitable for export under the Airlock rules.
  • You cannot export trained models from the RE.
  • Researchers may train models within the RE, provided they are not intended for export. For example, a model can be trained on a subset of data and applied to another subset within the RE to generate Airlock- compliant outputs.
  • All research activities, including the use of machine learning models, can only be conducted under an approved and active project listed in the Research Registry (subject to approval by the independent Access Review Committee and the Genomics England Research Management Team). Projects will not be approved where the aim is to develop/train and then export machine learning models.

Genomics England is actively reviewing policies related to the use and potential export of machine learning models, and there may be future changes to the current rules. Any such changes will be communicated to all researchers working on projects related to machine learning models, and will be reflected in an update to this page if and
